From San Marco Quarter
From San Marco Quarter is a musical tribute to the Venetian Renaissance and Baroque composers and refers to the diverse styles in which they wrote their compositions. The title of the work refers to the oldest neighborhood or quarter of Venice, San Marco. In the renaissance and baroque style after the famous San Marco basilica, this district also housed many other churches, palaces and theaters for which all this music was once composed. Music was also widely practiced in the streets and houses of ordinary citizens. The numerous composers and musicians who lived and worked in this district provided not only an enormous range of sacred and official music, but also secular music. Joop van Dijk got into the skin of the composers of that time, as it were. Names like Pergolesi, Gabrieli, Monteverdi and Vivaldi are more famous and perhaps easier to recognize. But other 'Venetian' composers such as Willaert, Vecchi, Steffani, Caresana, Gastoldi, De Rore, Striggio and Jomelli are also featured in the work. It goes without saying that the work also contains the signature of the composer himself, who, despite the different style periods and techniques, has forged it into a homogeneous whole. From San Marco Quarter was commissioned by the NBK Foundation for the 1st Division of the Dutch Brass Band Championships 2020. However, these championships were postponed due to the COVID-19 virus. On October 30, 2021, From San Marco Quarter was premiered during the 40th Dutch Brass Band Championships in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. From San Marco Quarter is een muzikale ode aan de componisten uit de Venetiaanse renaissance en barok en refereert aan de diverse stijlen waarin zij hun composities schreven. De titel van het werk verwijst naar de oudste wijk of kwartier van Venetië, San Marco. In deze wijk bevonden zich in de renaissance en barok naar de beroemde San Marco basiliek ook tal van andere kerken, paleizen en theaters waar al deze muziek ooit voor werd gecomponeerd. Ook in de straten en huizen van de gewone burgers werd op grote schaal muziek beoefend. De talrijke componisten en musici die in deze wijk woonden en werkten zorgden niet alleen voor een enorm aanbod aan geestelijke en officiële muziek, maar ook aan wereldlijke muziek. Joop van Dijk is als het ware in de huid gekropen van de componisten van toen. Namen als Pergolesi, Gabrieli, Monteverdi en Vivaldi zijn wat bekender en misschien makkelijker te herkennen. Maar ook andere 'Venetiaanse' componisten als Willaert, Vecchi, Steffani, Caresana, Gastoldi, De Rore, Striggio en Jomelli komen voorbij in het werk. Vanzelfprekend bevat het werk ook de handtekening van de componist zelf, die ondanks de verschillende stijlperiodes en technieken er een homogeen geheel van heeft gesmeed. From San Marco Quarter werd in opdracht van de Stichting NBK gecomponeerd voor de 1e Divisie van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen 2020. Door het COVID-19 virus werden deze kampioenschappen echter uitgesteld. Op 30 oktober 2021 werd From San Marco Quarter in première gebracht tijdens de 40e Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht.

Joop van Dijk
Joop van Dijk (Utrecht, The Netherlands, 1961) studied bass tuba, contrabass trombone and conducting at the Utrecht Conservatorium from 1978 to 1984. From 1980 to 1995 he was a member of the ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble and the Dutch Brass Sextet (Hague Brass Sextet). He also worked as freelance tuba and contrabass player with all the Dutch symphony orchestras and professional ensembles. From 1987 to 2014 he was solo tuba player, composer and arranger with the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. As a composer, Joop van Dijk is self-taught. He is specialized in composing for brass band, concert band and fanfare orchestra. Many of his compositions have been used as compulsory works in national and international concert competitions and have been recorded on CD. Many of his compositions for wind band have been premiered by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, such as 'Nightwatch in Tivoli', 'The Great Dutchman', 'Prelude on the Navy Hymn', 'Sea of Songs', 'The Commodore's Crown' and the 'March Past for the King'. 'A Nightingale still singing' (2001), 'Celebration' (2004) and 'From San Marco Quarter' (2021) were used as compulsory works at the Dutch Brass Band Championships. For the European Brass Band Championships, Joop van Dijk composed 'Fantasy for Brass Band' (1997) and 'Light in the Darkness' (2012). In 2014 'National Australia Brass' conducted by David King premiered his composition 'Eternal'. Joop van Dijk has also composed a large number of works for fanfare orchestra. The best known of these are 'The Saba adventure', 'The Saba Encounters', 'Sinfonietta', 'Noormannen op de Vecht', 'Een Dag in de Heerlijkheid Wittem' and 'Two sketches'. All these works for fanfare orchestra were frequently used as compulsory works in national and international concert competitions. Besides composing, Joop van Dijk also works as a teacher, jury member and conductor. Joop van Dijk (Utrecht, 1961) studeerde bastuba, contrabastrombone en directie aan het Utrechts Conservatorium van 1978 tot 1984. Van 1980 tot 1995 maakte hij deel uit van het ASKO-Schönberg Ensemble en het Dutch Brass Sextet (Haags Koper Sextet). Daarnaast was hij als freelance tubaïst en contrabastrombonist werkzaam bij alle Nederlandse symfonie orkesten. Van 1987 tot 2014 was hij solo tubaïst, componist en arrangeur bij de Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine. Als componist is Joop van Dijk autodidact. Hij is gespecialiseerd in het componeren voor brassband, harmonie orkest en fanfare orkest. Veel van zijn composities werden gebruikt als verplichte werken bij nationale en internationale concertwedstrijden en werden opgenomen op CD. Veel van zijn composities voor harmonie orkest werden door de Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine in première gebracht zoals ‘Nachtwacht in Tivoli’, ‘The Great Dutchman’, ‘Prelude on the Navy Hymn’, ‘Sea of Songs’, ‘The Commodore’s Crown’ en de ‘Defileermars voor de Koning’.
